How to watch the moonrise; Or, How to read a book

Wander your area to find a hill with an unobstructed view to the east.

Look up the moonrise times for your town on sunrisesunset.com.

Pick a day near after the full moon and arrive on your hill 15ish minutes early.

Feel yourself come into equilibrium with the quiet and the darkness.

Wait exposed and expectant.

Reach out and slide your gaze along the jagged edge of the horizon, slowly, softly.

Watch for the orange glow seeping up from the horizon.

Run your sight across that bit of orange horizon as you would run your tongue repeatedly across the edge of a broken tooth.

Try not to blink.

“Oh! That orange dot drips upwards.”

Laugh.

When the orange puddle is loosed from the horizon, you may leave.

Wander a dense library, looking for a section you like.

Slide out a book that has an aesthetically pleasing spine.

Peeking into the new hollow on the shelf, look at the cover of the book one spot to the left.  If more pleasing, remove this book and place back the previous.  Repeat until a desired book is found.

Open the book near the middle, careful not to crack the spine.

Exhale.

Stick your face into the signatures but do not get nose grease on the pages.

Through the nose, inhale.

Go to the title page.  Say the title and author’s name aloud.

Skip the editor’s introduction if there is one, and begin reading at the first of the author’s words.

Read.

Delight in the thoughts of another.
